Despite really hot and humid conditions and a grueling 2 day format, Oxygen4energy athletes Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima finished tied for 5th at the AVP Virginia Beach Open.
On Saturday, they had to play 4 tough matches, 2 of which went to a 3rd game. They defeated Duffner/Hamilton in the 1st round and Jameson/Jones in the 2nd round. In the 3rd round, they faced the team that ended up winning the tournament, Jennifer Kessy and April Ross - the only team with 2 victories so far this year on the AVP tour. After this loss, they continued on to the Contender's bracket where they faced Kuk/Whitney in the final match of the day and beat them in a 3 game match.
After 4 matches in unrelenting heat, Lewis and Lima had to get up early on Sunday to face the finalists from the first tournament of the year, Diana Denecochea and Brit Hochevar. It was a battle, but the Oxygen4energy women ended up victorious. Next up was the 4th ranked team on tour this year, Angie Akers and Tyra Turner. Unfortunately, Akers and Turner got the best of Lewis and Lima in this match, but a 5th place finish on the AVP tour is definitely not something to scoff at.
According to Angela Lewis, "The oxygen really came in handy at this tournament. The two day format along with the hot conditions made endurance and recovery crucial. We used a lot of oxygen before and after each match and it made a BIG difference. Four matches in that kind of heat would normally leave us really exhausted on sunday, but because of the oxygen, we both felt much better than expected and were able to fight hard for the win over Diane and Brit. It was a great tourney for us. I'm really glad we had our oxygen!"
