Triathlon News: Felipe Bastos continues his winning ways!
July 27, 2010
Oxygen4energy sponsored athlete, Brazilian pro triathlete Felipe Bastos, continues to dominate the races he enters.
Despite a nagging injury that kept him from training hard earlier this year, Felipe just won 3 back to back sprint triathlons. The first was the Crystal River triathlon, then the Jacksonville Triathlon and finally, the Nature Coast Twilight Triathlon. This makes 5 of 6 Overall multisport victories in 2010.
"At Jacksonville, I tried going for the course record, but the fierce winds on the first 5 miles of the bike course made that pretty much impossible. At Twilight, I was up against a tougher field, including winner for the past 3 consecutive years. I hadn't competed in this race since 2006, so I had serious doubts as to my ability to get another win. I decided to attack the course from the gun and solo at the front. My strategy worked well as I exited the swim with a small lead, but long enough that I had a 5 second gap at the beginning of the bike. I used it to my advantage, putting my head down and riding 29-30 mph for the first 4 miles in order to build a comfortable margin. The lead was nearly a minute at the end of the bike, and I ran alone to finish with a 50-second margin at the finish line, beating my time from 4 years ago by 30 seconds, setting a new bike course record, and beating the winner from the past 3 years in the process. I took a lot of oxygen before the start of each race and more immediately after each race. As to be expected, I felt great during all races, and had really fast recovery periods."
